Some notes on sound
I have never thought of sound as being a simple accompaniment, I've always asked myself to what extent sound can be an actor and interact with the performers on stage rather than follow them, to what extent it can become a 'character'. I would like the sound to be able to propose a contradiction, a conflict, a relationship, a retort or a reply, to which the performers can react just as they do to the other actors or dancers on stage. It is this relationship, which is planned but elastic, organised but organic, with or against, which has become somehow the goal of my work. Even when the sound creates an ambiance, reinforces and follows the movements and the words of the performers, it must express something concrete, something multiple, something of its own, it must add new information rather than just emphasizing the existing information. I think it is partly because of this that I work mainly with sounds from real life, both recognisable and abstract, that I minimalise the use of effects, and that any use of music must be justified beyond the emotion that it can produce. Sound is as much its meaning as its sensation.
